EMA Concludes Evolven is Industry’s Most Adaptive Change Management Analytics

download_ema_reportIn the recent EMA report, senior analysts explore why it has never been more challenging to effectively cope with the impact of change and configuration issues, and how IT operation managers can handle it effectively. The report, entitled 'Evolven Introduces SaaS Capability for Industry's most Adaptive Change Management Analytics,' focuses on Evolven's unique qualities over other enterprise vendors, stating: "… none appear to have delivered as distinctive and adaptive a footprint in this arena as Evolven."

Growing Complexity and Dynamics in the Data Center

Today's change and complexity is a major challenge to many IT organizations. Even before the advent of cloud computing, the frequency with which configuration updates are made across complex, interconnected infrastructures is increasing wildly. Today, with the advent of cloud and virtualization, managing changing infrastructures in support of critical applications has demanded huge advances in real-time currency, more flexible approaches to change management control, surging dependencies on automation, and above all a cross-domain versus siloed mindset that is still challenging to many IT organizations for cultural as much as technological reasons.

Existing IT Solutions Fall Short

The foundational technology of application mapping discovery and the configuration management database (CMDB) or configuration management system (CMS) is too rigid to handle today's dynamics alone. These approaches don't provide visibility at the most granular level –where the root-cause of downtime and incidents starts. They also lack the detailed analytics required to translate abundant configuration data into critical decision-support information. The report observes that Evolven is "... complementary to performance management solutions, CMDBs and CMS capabilities."

The Power of IT Analytics

The challenges of complexity and dynamics for IT change management and IT configuration managementin are only aggravated by the advent of cloud computing and associated virtualization technologies. Referencing the January 2010 EMA report, Operationalizing Cloud, Dennis Drogseth reviews recent survey results and concludes that "Those IT organizations with advanced service management-related analytics were 1.8 times more likely to reduce management complexity via cloud, 1.9 more likely to improve service resilience via cloud, and twice as likely to deliver business model enhancements via cloud."

The Central Role of Evolven

For IT operations, keeping servers and environments consistent, is a major challenge. The report considers the current market of tools, saying "...while many vendors are creatively addressing the implications of this need for real-time currency and crossdomain insights, none appear to have delivered as distinctive and adaptive a footprint in this arena as Evolven." Evolven looks at the software infrastructure stack from application to front-end services, middleware, databases, OS and virtualization layers and HW interdependencies. However, it is also granular in focus—targeting Windows, Linux and Unix systems versus mid-range systems, mainframes, or other infrastructure components such as network and storage. Critical subject-matter-relevant information such as application architecture, configuration files, and database schema are also available, as is clear contrasts with time and change-related criteria.

Looking For Meaning in Change Data

Many IT professionals face the problem of what to do with the massive amounts of collected data, meaning the solution is not just about detecting changes. For many, that's the easy part. The challenging, time-consuming side is deciding, from across all the parameters in complex IT infrastructure, what matters most. The report highlights how Evolven does this differently, reporting "Evolven's approach is to gather and analyze data holistically, using analytics to "cut through the noise" to highlight information of relevance.
Evolven allows IT Operations, planning to move to the cloud, to easily compare servers and business service environments and identify and report on any inconsistencies and critical differences by comparing even multiple environments at once."

The report was produced by Dennis Drogseth (VP), and Charlie Betz (Research Director) - EMA.
