BSM Slowed by Growing Complexity and Dynamics in the Data Center
The IT landscape has grown in complexity supporting a wider and growing range of technologies and platforms (Virtualization, Cloud, Open Source etc.), and accelerated application deployment schedules. Today a typical environment is highly dynamic including a large data volume – even thousands of different configuration parameters.
Business Service Management (BSM) today has morphed into an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) support solution rather than the pure infrastructure and application management vision that appeared nearly a decade ago. The original business service management (BSM) concept was founded on the capability to map business services to infrastructure components. This gave end users visibility into IT as well as bridged the way IT and users saw applications.
IT Existing Solutions Fall Short
However, the foundational technology of application mapping discovery and the configuration management database (CMDB) or configuration management system (CMS) have proven too rigid to handle today's dynamics. These approaches don't provide visibility at the most granular level –where the root-cause of downtime and incidents starts. They also lack the detailed analytics required to translate abundant configuration data into critical decision-support information.
Rediscover BSM
In the recent report from Forrester Research, Jean-Pierre Garbani, VP and Principal Analyst of Forrester Research, declares that it's time to rediscover BSM. The new Forrester Report focuses on new BSM point tools for improving Infrastructure & Operation's Change Management and Incident Management Processes. The report declares that a new breed of solutions is appearing that will prove useful in helping IT operations professionals achieve their BSM goals. Though no one solution encompasses all that BSM embodies today, several point products exemplify the original BSM concept.
The Central Role of Evolven
The report prominently notes the central role Evolven as one of a new breed of tools to help incident and change management, saying "Evolven Software for a change control solution that discovers all changes in real time." The report emphasizes the sought after characteristics of the rising vendors in IT management, adding "No one solution encompasses all that BSM embodies today, but several point products exemplify the original BSM concept. Namely, they're effective products that provide immediate results by building a bridge between the end user and IT operations."
What to Look For in New BSM Tools
There are a number of key capabilities that bring new life into the world of BSM. The report looks at "…tools that offer both real-time and granular discovery to help support a better incident and change management process."
With its Configuration Analytics solution Evolven redefines change management and configuration management and takes on the dynamics and complexity of the modern data center and cloud. Evolven Configuration Analytics applies breakthrough analytics to turn the dynamic, overwhelming configuration data into actionable information. Jean-Pierre Garbani, VP Forrester and the primary author of this Forrester Research report writes: "Evolven analyzes change impact through application dependency discovery, detects the rogue ones, and proposes an actionable dashboard for remediation."
The report was produced by Jean-Pierre Garbani, with Robert Whitely and Alex Crumb.
