Why is the current Configuration Management Database (CMDB) ill-equipped to perform the function it was intended to? William Vambenepe expands on the main points listed in Bernd Harzog’s blog entry “the CMDB [is] irrelevant in a Virtual and Cloud based world”, saying that a new approach to discovery is needed.
The new reality of today's data center means new information is being created at a very rapid rate and similarly environments can change at an unprecedented pace. This, as Vambenepe describes, is a “dinosaurs meet meteorite” kind of historical event for CMDB technology.
A large part of the value that has been provided by CMDBs is their ability to automate resource discovery, which will not suffice in “the Cloud” - a highly automated IT environment. The rate of configuration change can completely overwhelm the CMDB's discovery heuristics.
