10 In Depth IT Salary Survey Results


 

Over the past year, the economy has been in slow growth mode, and an uneven recovery is holding back IT department budgets. At the same time, this has created some pockets of opportunity in many areas of IT. 

According to many of the salary surveys we've compiled, this situation has resulted in a stagnation in IT management salaries, with companies holding the line on significant salary increases. So, IT managers have seen more compensation in one-time annual bonuses connected to the progress of their division or projects. With the rise of the Occupy Movements, income inequality became a hot topic.

To keep track of what's happening with IT and the people that are involved in IT, we put together a comprehensive list of salary survey and compensation results for IT professionals. Discoveries: IT hiring has shifted into higher gear within many firms. In some areas - networking, applications development and security - there exist an abundance of positions and a shortage of skilled candidates. This situation may continue to heat up as businesses renew their focus on systems upgrades and try to keep pace with rapid technological changes.

Conclusions: Demand for skilled professionals is strong many areas of IT, as companies seek to address new demands, such as growing use of cloud computing and mobile devices, while keeping hardware and software systems up-to-date.

Surveyed: 5000 IT workers

Discoveries: More than half of the respondents reported being "significantly affected" by budget cuts and heavier workloads, with 66% saying they expect continued workload increases in the next year.

Conclusions: Survey shows that increases in total average compensation, salaries and bonuses are all higher in 2011 than they were in 2010. Fewer of 2011 respondents reported budget cuts, salary cuts or freezes, hiring freezes, permanent layoffs, training cuts or canceled projects. And fewer mentioned the economy as a challenge.

Surveyed:

Discoveries:Technology professionals endured a second straight year of nearly flat salaries.

Conclusions: There are glimmers of the business recovery within the study. Nearly half 
of those surveyed (49%) received a salary increase in 2010 compared to just 36% who saw raises in the previous year. And more technology professionals received bonuses: 29% compared with 24% of respondents in 2009. Tech professionals expressed slightly more satisfaction over pay than last year, with 50% "somewhat" or "very satisfied," an increase from 46% of respondents who felt that way last year.

Surveyed:
 Over 12,000 IT professionals from around the globe

Discoveries: Satisfaction with the current job directly affects one's willingness and intensity to search for a new position. Overall, 38% of the IT professionals who responded to this year's survey report they are considering making a job change.

Conclusions: For the third straight year, the stagnant economic environment held salaries in check for the IT profession. The average salary for survey respondents this year was $79,579, down 3.2 percent from the 2010 survey ($82,115). Although average salaries in the industry gave up some ground, it's important to note that they are still eight percent higher than $73,900 recorded in our 2008 study. This trend is consistent with findings from other IT industry studies.

5. InformationWeek 2011 Salary Survey: CIOs, CTOs and IT VPs

Surveyed: 1,441 IT professionals

Discoveries: Naming what matters most about their jobs, the No. 1 choice, with 51% of respondents, was "challenges of job/responsibility."

Conclusions: CIOs, CTOs and IT VPs enjoyed a modest increase in compensation, and a cautious economic optimism is blooming. But a gender gap persists for women at all levels of IT management.

Surveyed:
 1,467 IT professionals

Discoveries: There were differences in base salaries for many IT professionals engaged in leading initiatives, particularly supply chain management, data warehouse, and business-to-consumer systems.

Conclusions: IT staff salaries have hit a plateau over the past year, advancing little from levels attained at the end of the last economic expansion, which ended about 2008. In lieu of salary increases, however, most have seen increases in their annual bonus levels.

Surveyed:
 1,467 IT professionals

Discoveries: Salaries were higher across the board for IT management professionals engaged in application areas such as business-to-business systems, supply chain management, and enterprise resource planning (ERP).

Conclusions: There is a stagnation in IT management salaries, with companies holding the line on significant salary increases. Instead, IT managers have seen more compensation in one-time annual bonuses tied to the progress of their division or projects.

8. SearchCIO IT salary survey: Highest earners are cozy with business, hard on IT

Surveyed:
 875 senior and midlevel IT executives

Discoveries: High earners appear to enjoy better relationships with their bosses and the business than do those who make less. They get strong support from executive management, and their IT teams are praised by the business.

Conclusions: Although compensation for senior or midlevel IT executives in general declined 2% in 2011 compared to 2010, senior and midlevel executives at large companies enjoyed an 11% boost in compensation.

Surveyed:
 1,700 IT executives and roles globally

Discoveries: CIO salaries vary by industry, as well as the size of the company.

Conclusions: Salary averages stayed flat compared to the 2010 survey data, but total compensation (base salary plus bonuses and other incentives) dropped significantly as senior IT executives battled with reductions in benefits, stock options and bonuses.

Conclusions: The findings over the past year predict an optimistic future for IT jobs in 2012. However, the boom in IT jobs and staffing budgets will be coupled with increased difficulty in securing the right tech talent.
