'Twas an Outage Before Christmas

As we wind down the year and in the spirit of the holiday season, we have taken another perspective on the perenial favorite ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, looking at this night through the experience of IT operations.

Enjoy.

'Twas the night before Christmas and I longed for my house
With one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse
Reviewing the changes into the night
Feeling a deployment deadline that was tight
We each worked from our desks hunched over our keys
Typing by the glow of our overworked PCs
And I in a sweat and the team in a tizzy
Checking every last bit, till we were dizzy
But then from my monitor arose such a clatter
I sprang from my chair to see the matter
But all I could see was an alert and a warning
And I resorted to a look of scorning
For you see, I hadn't known the change one guy made
A last second tweak, that was missed I'm afraid
I ran the deploy script to see what would appear
I crossed my fingers and trembled with fear
I stared at my phone, as it started to ring wildly
I got 50 messages, and that's putting it mildly
The customers were reporting a performance lag
On this Christmas Day my spirits began to sag,
Then servers, hardware, layers, and apps!
I looked everywhere to find the source of the lapse
I struggled continuously into the night
Hoping to identify the cause by the break of daylight
I'd review every detail of the configuration
Cry and shout to share my frustration
I'd search high and low at a break-neck pace
And comb every parameter of the database
Tomorrow I'll wake from this downtime dream
Grateful I'm still a part of the IT ops team
And tell you that now I know that our operations are too complex
That we have to keep track of way too many dynamic objects
